painting by Alexander Rubchenko

Alexander Rubchenko was born in Ukraine in 1960 and attended the Moscow Art Institute. He came into conflict with the Soviet authorities after participating in a grass-roots disarmament group and endured persecution. He has lived in New York since 1990.

His art is expressive of today's social turmoil, depicting an abstruse, calamitous world comprised of insurrectionary clandestine savages and conspiratorial plots. It is reminiscent of the expressionism of Nicholas de StŠel and Rick Prol. On display will be five oil paintings executed since 1993 and a number of smaller works in gouache and mixed techniques.

He has exhibited at Wares for Art, The Emerging Collector, Chocolate Milk Gallery and at the Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Arts Center. He has appeared numerous times on the German radio "Deutsche Welle" and on the BBC and has given interviews to various publications, including New York Newsday and ArtSpeak magazine.
