Steve Roden

mir / we need to say goodbye

An installation of sound and drawings relating to a variety of influences including the Russian space station Mir and the death of Robert Bresson.

Saturdays

February 19 & 26, 2000

drawing by Steve Roden

Mir is an installation of sound and drawings inspired by a wide range of influences that just happened to have hit me at the same time. A newspaper article regarding the demise of the Russian space station 'Mir', the death of film-maker Robert Bresson, the writings of Thomas Merton, an old kid's book on satellites, and on and on. The drawings are deeply rooted in all of these things, the soundscape is composed of the processed sounds of a microphone spinning through the air. Everything seems connected in this kind of a floating solitude.

Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. His paintings, drawings, sculptures, films and soundworks have been seen in museums, galleries, and alternative arts spaces all over the world. A suite of drawings was recently seen at The Drawing Center in New York City, and the sound installation 'reading without reading/within' was recently seen at Podewil in Berlin. Roden has several cd releases under his own name, as well as under the name in be tween noise.
