Ben Manley

wind-blown, fire-red

a sound and light installation

Saturdays

2 - 6 PM

May 17 - 31, 1997

wind-blown are remote electroacoustic ready-mades, amplified and translated in real time to the listening room, and fire-red is the light from sound-sensitive flicker bulbs, source of wireless radio transmissions to resonant reliquaries.

With diverse ready-made sound sources, Ben Manley presents electroacousticperformances and installations that hope to call attention to interests in sonic potential and the imagination of sound energy.

He has performed at venues in New York City including Roulette, Experimental Intermedia, Lotus, the Knitting Factory, The Kitchen, Jack Tilton Gallery, Greenwich House Music School, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Context, Generator, La Mama La Galleria, and others. He has also performed in Munich, Kšln, Dortmund, Munster, and at STEIM in Amsterdam.

As a curator, Manley has produced events at Greenwich House Music School and elsewhere, including "LUCIER @ 65", a festival of the music of Alvin Lucier, "Stormy Mondays" with twenty performers and installation artists over five evenings, and "say YES! to experimental music" with pianos, vacuum cleaners, and complaints from neighbors.

"An Alvin Lucier for the younger set, Manley is a latter-day conceptualist with a whimsical imagination...."

Kyle Gann, Village Voice
