The Keep

Historical recordings of avante-garde music presented as sound installations

Saturday, November 7, 1998, 2 - 9 PM

Music by John Cage

The "Music of Changes", in a new recording by Joseph Kubera (Lovely Music), plus an excerpt from Cage's own performance (1976) of "Cheap Imitation", from the archives of David Behrman.

Saturday, November 14, 1998, 2 - 9 PM

Music by Terry Jennings

The historic concert by Jennings and La Monte Young at Yoko Ono's loft in 1960, from the series curated by Young and consisting of the Piece for 2 Saxophones, and three solo piano works. From Young's archives.

The Keep is a new listening series at Studio Five Beekman presenting historical recordings, some out-of-print, some never published, some (like Kubera's) simply exceptional, of avante-garde music of the 50's, 60's and 70's. The recordings are looped continuously for 7 hours and the listener may come at any time and stay as long as he or she wishes. The purpose is to demonstrate that this kind of music (and all of the selections are chosen with this in mind) is best appreciated in a concentrated listening environment, not the concert hall. Come "hear" for yourself!
