About

Since April, 2001, Diapason, gallery for sound and intermedia has presented a varied program featuring performances and installations. Founded by Michael J. Schumacher and Liz Gerring, it continues the tradition of Studio Five Beekman, offering audiences New York's only venue devoted to sound art.

Diapason's facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Diapason Gallery for Sound is a program of TonalMotion, Inc a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Diapason is supported by The New York State Council on the Arts, The Trust for Mutual Understanding, The Experimental Television Center, Phaedrus Foundation, The New York State Music Fund, Meet The Composer's JPMorganChase Regrant Program for Small Ensembles, Kirk Radke, and generous donations from individuals.

Submitting Your Work for Consideration

Diapason focuses on multi-channel sound installations playable by computer. We also program mixed media work, especially works for sound and video. Works with a "sculptural" component are occasionally programmed. Please refer to the floor plan below for specifics about the space and equipment.

Diapason has two listening environments. the "lounge" is a relaxed setting with seating where people are encouraged to hang out, talk, read, and listen. It contains a 12 channel sound system placed asymmetrically around the space. The "gallery" is a focused listening environment with a high quality 8 channel system. The room is carpeted and people are asked to remove their shoes. This is the main exhibition space for new work.

Exhibits last one month (the gallery is open Saturdays only, 2-8PM) and feature one or two artists. The lounge will also feature works from Diapason's archive, choose-able via computer interface by listeners.

Please send a written proposal that describes your piece and takes into consideration the floor plan and capabilities of the space. In addition, be aware that the format of presentation is normally 4 six hour installations of one artist's work. Also submit a recording, video, score, text or whatever materials best represent the nature of your work. You will receive a response within 3 months.

Guest Curators

We welcome proposals from curators who would be interested in working with Diapason to present works of Sound Art within our space. If interested, please submit a proposal that details your concept for the series, the artists you would like to include, examples of their work, and your own curriculum vitae.
