Shared Frequencies

NOTES:
Shared Frequencies was presented at Diapason in February 2005, but was originally realized as a public art project in 2002 (supported by a fellowship from Media Alliance). Shared Frequencies is an ever changing sound installation where I gather others' acoustic transmissions, environmental sounds, or a combination of both for live or future modification and modulation with an analog sound synthesis system. Initially, acoustic materials pulled from Family Radio Service (FRS) channels were transduced and/or received via two-way radios and immediately processed by a portable sound synthesis "studio" that I set up at various sidewalk locations throughout New York City. At present, the setup includes several radio scanners and a bank of analog synthesizer modules. The primary method of signal modification is routing received transmissions through Low Pass Filters (which are in turn modulated by dynamically triggered and shaped LFO control signals, among other things). The range of results includes timbrally varied sweeps and bursts of pulses that are mixed in changing amounts with speech, noise, tone sequences, and other sound events germane to General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), FRS, and related two-way transmissions. Usually, a minimum of two speakers are used to project the sound, but at least three speakers are preferred for longer term installations. The emphasis of the project is on using real time sound events and live electronics to modify the same.

BIO:
KABIR CARTER lives and works in New York City and is currently enrolled in the MFA program at Bard College. Carter's work focuses on speech, urban environmental sound, acoustic feedback, analog sound synthesis, transmissive acoustics, specialized microphone technologies, and the presentation of live electroacoustic work in public spaces. His compositions, performances, and sound installations have been presented at PS122 Gallery, d.u.m.b.o. arts center, and in public presentations throughout New York City. He continues to realize Walking in the City, a net art project commissioned by Miami based music festival Subtropics. Carter has received awards and grants for his work from Media Alliance and Rhizome.org, and has also been an artist-in-residence at Atlantic Center for the Arts and LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway. Upcoming activities include a guest composer residency as part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Create @ iEAR program, and a presentation of Shared Frequencies during this year's Subtropics festival.
