Saturday March 31 Sophisticated Filters Ed Tomney & Ron Kuivila $ 7 suggested donation . NOTES: Sophisticated Filters is an ongoing collaborative project and will be presented at Diapason as a live performance-installation by composers Ron Kuivila and Ed Tomney. An evening length composition in two sections entitled "Filtering 3-31", components of this performance will entail live control of custom designed software, electro-acoustic sculptures and vintage modular synthesis (EMS Synthi AKS, Serge modular). For this concert, multiple media, consisting of physical and electroacoustic sound sources; archival audio recordings; foley art; analog synthesis and customized software will be used to produce an enormous variety of sounds that are close to - but not quite - identical. Attempting to produce analagous sonic character with different instrumentation yields subtle differences in timbre and texture unattainable within any one medium. The live performance of this original composition incorporates improvisational elements: responses as moment-form reactions to timbral clusters and gestures affords a unique realization and interpretation every time the composition is performed.
BIOS: Ron Kuivila composes music and designs sound installations that revolve around the unusual homemade and home-modified electronic instruments he designs. He pioneered the use of ultrasound (In Appreciation) and sound sampling (Alphabet) in live performance. Other pieces have explored compositional algorithms (Loose Canons), speech synthesis (The Linear Predictive Zoo) and high voltage phenomena (Pythagorean Puppet Theatre). Most recently, his pieces have recalled the sound world of live electronics while exploiting the compositional possibilities of digital signal processing (Fugue States). Many of Kuivila's compositions also take the form of sound installations. For example Radial Arcs, a sound installation commissioned by Ars Electronica, involves the coordination of 96 stun guns. Ted Tomney is a composer and visual artist. His work as a synthesist began with projects such as "The Last Gasp Ensemble" and the electronic trio "ENVLP". His involvement in this area of acoustic art evolved into larger scale pieces such as "The Mechanical Guitar Orchestra", a robotic ensemble designed for installation and performance consisting of automated electric guitar sculptures. Subsequently, he composed a series of radio works in Europe, ("Kunstradio-Radiokunst", "Bilder Im Kopf" - ORF) and exhibited sound installations designed for public spaces involving passage such as stairwells, elevators, subway stations and hallways. In his solo installations ("Ecotype Transmissions") he incorporates reanimated spacial events with live mechanical events such as motorized transducer fields. Ed Tomney is also a member of the analog synthesis collective "Analogos" which performs regularly at Diapason Gallery. Kuivila and Tomney appeared in a number of group shows of sound art in the late 80's. Conversations after one of those exhibitions led to a collaborative performance project entitled, "A Clock for the Kitten", which was performed at the Paula Cooper Gallery in NYC and at SUNY Buffalo. The Sophisticated Filters represents a continuation of their ongoing collaboration as composers, performers and installation artists. . .
