ECOTYPE TRANSMISSIONS - 2006

Ed Tomney

These works emphasize an exchange and dialect between sound sources (genesis) and emulation models (ecotype) designed to amalgamate in order to create a third state. In practice, audio field recordings are reanimated using analog synthesis, foley art techniques, digital media and are then orchestrated with the original acoustic source material in multichannel combinations and patterns. This process can also be reversed, in that synthetic sources can be merged with acoustic archives of similar texture, timbre and rhythmic content.

A suite of compositions and soundworks will be presented that incorporate modular analog synthesis, field recordings, acoustic instrumentation and foley-art. Various sound cells from these compositions will be re-spatialized via Max/Msp playback. Along with the works transmitted will be an assortment of modular analog synthesizers, strategically located in the space and set to autonomously generate additional live sound as an adjunct to the sound files playback.

Works presented:

Back room:

"Rialto - A Task Of 3 Events" (2006)
EMS Vcs3, moog oscillator, violin, cello, oboe, clarinet.

Main room:

"Acousmatic Drone Pack" (2005-2006)
Laptops (2), field recordings, digital oscillators, modular analog synthesis, moog oscillators, shortwave oscillation.

"Signal 48 Groups" (2006)
Custom fabricated gate, various archival vinyl recordings, various analog oscillators.

"Seismic Room Intoner Time Stamp" ( 2005-2006)
Custom fabricated electro-acoustic sound generator, audio recordings, EMS vcs3, moog oscillators.

"Reflex 4" (2006)
EMS Synthi - AKS Live, automated analog synthesizer array. main room

Ed Tomney is a composer and visual artist. His work as a synthesist began with projects such as "The Last Gasp Ensemble" and "ENVLP". This area of acoustic art evolved into larger scale projects such as "The Mechanical Guitar Orchestra", which was a robotic ensemble designed for both installation and performance consisting of automated electric guitar sculptures. Subsequently, he composed a series of radio artworks in Europe and exhibited sound installations designed for public spaces involving passage such as stairwells, elevators, subway stations and hallways. A variety of these works, ("Whispering Elms", "Certified Stealth") were exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world and include the original design for Art In General's audio-elevator, an installation that still functions to this day as part of their ongoing programming.

Besides solo sound installations, he currently performs with fellow composer and sound artist Ron Kuivila in a project known as "Sophisticated Filters" and is an original member of the analog synthesis collective, "Analogos", which performs regularly at Diapason.
