Tonus-music laboratory research results: the longest journey begins with the first step

Tonus-music - a new minimal groove music from europe

Tonus-music is a name for the challenge to create a maximum of effect with a minimum of musical material. it is a concept of "leaving out".

The concert, rehearsal and recording location "tonus-music laboratory" has existed in berne for more than two years. At this time, about 50 musicians from different musical fields work together with don li on this concept. Moreover "tonus-music" is a record label, a platform for creations from the laboratory and other similar projects.

"Tanzmeter" is a instrument invented and played by the dance performing musician Ania Losinger. She plays this soundfloor with her four extemities, with prepared shoes and sticks. The result is a transformation of my musical concept, engagement and balance become visual. With the compositions that we will perform in the concert on march 29th, I pursue an idea, which is influenced by New York composer Steve Reich, who started already 1965 using spoken words in his compositions.

"The longest journey begins with the first step". (Lao-Tzu/Tao Te Ching/64) Irecorded this sentence from people living in new york in different languages: English, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Indian, German and French. By writing down their rhythms, sounds and accents Icreated and developed groove-sculptures. Every sentence is like a sculpture of its own. By repeating these patterns, the specific mood of every language begins to live.

Don Li (formerly Don Pfaeffli) was born in Bern, CH on April 7, 1971, the youngest of 5 children. The multi-instrumentalist (saxophonist, bass clarinetist), sculptor, vegetarian and tea drinker has lived from his music since his 17th year.

He has always trusted his intuition to guide him.

In the mid 90's, don li founded tonus music. His love of Taoism and Zen-buddhism influenced the development of his work in many ways.

In a symbolic gesture, he changed his name to Don Li after the birth of his son Li.
